With her passing Feb. 13, 2020, at 85, an existing endowment became known as the James T. and Ann W. File Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship benefits any Cass County high school graduate with demonstrated financial need.

Ann was born July 5, 1934, in Mount Clemens, 13th of George and Anna West's 14 children.

She married James Terrance File March 16, 1957, in Kalamazoo. They were married for more than 37 years before his 1994 death.

The family business, Porky's Party Place in Cassopolis, celebrates its 40 th anniversary in 2022.

Ann graduated from Mt. Clemens High School with honors in 1953 and was awarded a scholarship to Western Michigan University to study physical education. She also met Jim, who was from Dowagiac.

The year 1957 was an outstanding year for her as she got married, graduated from college and gave birth to her first son. They moved to the Vandalia farm in 1959 to raise their family.

The Files had five sons: Paul, Mike, Scott, Todd and Bob. Paul served on the SMC Board of Trustees from 2003 to 2015.

"Ann always had room in her heart, at her table and in her vehicle for one more person," according to her obituary published by Leader Publications. "She nurtured and provided for anyone who needed her. Countless people called her mom, grandma, aunt and dearest friend. Ann was also very active in the community of Cassopolis. She was involved in church activities, board meetings, fundraisers and social clubs, to name a few. It was well-known and often said that 'if you need to get something done, call Ann File!' "

"She loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, with all her heart," her daughter-in-law, Sherrie, said.

Mrs. File, who did some substitute teaching for Cassopolis, had 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Two grandchildren, Andrew and Nicholas, graduated from SMC.

SMC's foundation accepts contributions to existing scholarships in addition to establishing new scholarships and planned estate gifts. Direct donations to: SMC Foundation, 58900 Cherry Grove Road, Dowagiac, MI 49047.
